performance: action for the future
traditionally performance is what we do when someone is watching. yet if we are self aware we are performing for our mind camera. according to wikipedia: “performance may be either scripted or unscripted, random or carefully orchestrated; spontaneous or otherwise carefully planned with or without audience participation. the performance can be live or via media; the performer can be present or absent. it can be any situation that involves four basic elements: time, space, the performer’s body, or presence in a medium, and a relationship between performer and audience. performance art can happen anywhere, in any venue or setting and for any length of time. the actions of an individual or a group at a particular place and in a particular time constitute the work”. performance carries with it a certain expectation of reward and appreciation. at the very least there is the applause at the end of a traditionally staged piece, as well the proximity of the creator to give immediate feedback to. there is a greater ease of interaction with the artist being a performer in their own work.
performers feel compelled to express through movement and action or some relation to these. many would say that they would do their performative action regardless of compensation. making a living from your passion is certainly a bonus but the compulsion to do what you love, the will to allow the memes free conduit of your self, is inseparable from the soul of the human. performers are the ripple makers in our world. they are the ones who push culture forward. the execution of an action or something accomplished is the dictionary definition of performance, how broad that seems conceptually, relating to art. there are many ways to accomplish goals and if the execution of any action is performance, then every action of you take is part of the performance of your life. then every life is a work of art and worth engaging with.
if we are constantly aware of our impact on the world around us we are at least paying heed, being mindful of our place and consequence. are we performing when there is no audience? movement is extremely important to cognition. it is important to reprogramming the brain and inputting new knowledge. the act, process, or result of moving is considered movement, thus the electrical impulses travel through our brain they create movement. when we sleep and we dream our realities into being there is more movement than when we are normally conscious. the desire to communicate is innate. to allow that movement of those impulses laden with meme power to move out into the world. sleep, stillness and silence can all be methods of performing your communication.
if you are feeling undervalued as less performative artist, get out to a group and have your peers appreciate what you do in a safe setting. if you are more courageous then take your work out to the public and show it to them any way that you can. paint or draw in public spaces. art has become secretive and specialised, make it more accessible to people and that will facilitate engagement with your work.
every breath you take and thought you make is a performance. spectacle has come to mean performance but it is only one small facet of the range of possibilities that performing offers. your brain is performing when you sleep, you perform when you rise. the multitude scintillae performances that make up each day of the larger work that is our life, should be treated with as much care as a particular project or goal because each layer of mindfulness creates greater manifestations of your will.
